Are people residing around Aravallis becoming Hanuman ?

Image
With as many as 31 off the 128 hills and hillocks of the Aravallis getting disappeared in the last many years till 2018  a member of panel  of  the Apex court asked as if humans have become Hanuman due to which there have been a disappearance in the number of hills in the ranges. This comment/pun came from the member at a time when there has been a huge upsurge in illegal mining over the last few year. Background Aravallis are the oldest mountain ranges of the world and are spread across 4 states i.e., Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana over 700 kms having its highest point at Gurushikhar(1722m) in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. Apart from having a direct impact on the micro climate and hydrological situation of the area, the ranges have a significant impact on the biodiversity and ecosystem of the entire region, supporting open forests, notable forts, and temples of historical significance. The Aravalli's importance as the primary source of aquifer recharge in the nationa...

Does India also experiences Tornadoes ?

Image
When I was a child I used to watch a show 'storm-chasers' which used to be telecasted on Discovery channel and watching that I used to get excited that I will also do the same whenever I will be getting a chance to do that around my place but sadly from that age until now I never saw any tornado nor heard of any tornado hitting India. 2 days back a news started circulating everywhere that a tornado wrecked havoc in USA  after ripping through 6 states of America with Kentucky facing most of the brunt with having wind speeds gusting upto 320kmph and killing atleast 100. With this sad news many had a curiosity that "whether India also experiences tornadoes or not ?"  Does it occur in India ? It does happen in India but on a relatively lower and lesser intense scale than in US For instance major recorded tornadoes are as follows: Calcutta--1838--215 fatalities Assam-- 1963 --- 139 fatalities New Dehli -- 1978 -- 700 fatalities Odisha -- 1978 -- 150 fatalities West Bengal ...

IPCC 6th Assessment Report: What does it mean for India ?

Image
As soon as IPCC released it's assessment report, the news spread like wildfire creating anguish and sparked people about the consequential threat of climate change. Amid all the information and facts what everyone wanted to find out was what does this report meant for India ? so I thought I would gather info from various sources and would compile that info in my blog so that it could reach to the masses. What IPCC is ? The IPCC was established in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization. Its mission was to provide global policymakers with periodic, scientific assessments of climate change to guide national and global policies. The reports by IPCC assess the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. The findings of the IPCC reports state the "level of confidence" with which they are made. However, the reports usually do not make any policy recommendat...

Not so "Waste roads"

Image
" 20-500 years" , this is the time period required for plastics to decompose which varies depending on the various structure and materials it is made up of. From toothbrush to our cell phones to the food packaging industry everything runs on plastics, so I would not hesitate in saying that our life revolves around plastics. India generates 9.46 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, of which 40 per cent remains uncollected and 43 per cent is used for packaging, most of which is single-use, as per a report from a reputed newspaper. As we all know about the 3R principles we have been studying since our school days,  Burning would cause air pollution. composting wouldn't really work as it will take 100s of years to decompose. In which other way we can use plastics to our advantage ? One of the innovative steps India have taken over the past years is to involve plastic waste in the construction of roads thus I call it as not so waste roads, as it uses plastic waste as a co...

Monsoons - Time for Rejuvenation

Image
Amid raging pandemic haunting India and the world for past two years, economists and the whole of nation is eyeing on the 4 month long rainy period which commenced it's journey over the southernmost state of India a day back. Those hot sultry past months will soon be replaced by the moist drizzly pleasant for a few months. Rains rejuvenates the nation which are more important then ever in this year. India's 60% of the agriculture is dependent on monsoon rains along with it millions of rupees of industries that are dependent on farming activities are at the mercy of rain gods.  With the continuous downfall of economy due to covid, somehow if the rains will be normal and evenly distributed over the Indian mainland in the next 4 months it will be a huge blessing for the nation. In the current scenario where we are used to hear the sad/depressive/negative news all around maybe the southwest winds will bring some cheerful happy news for us. Ha...
